Obituary

Carl David Askling (1925 - 2015 ) died in his sleep at the Lutheran Rehabilitation and Skilled Care Center on Harvard Street, Worcester, Mass. He was 89 years old. Carl was the son of Carl H. and Ida (Johnson) Askling. He lived on Vernon Hill, where his father was City Council representative from Ward 6 until 1940, when the family moved to Pleasant St., Leicester. After graduating Leicester High, he joined the 49th Fighter Control Squadron of the 5th Air Force and spent 21 months during WW2 in the South Pacific in Australia, New Guinea and the Philippines. He landed on Leyte with the marines and infantry on D-Day plus One (June 6 1945) during the greatest Naval Battle in history. He received: Philippine Liberation Ribbon; two Presidential Unit Citations.

Graduated - Harvard University, Cambridge, Mass., in 1950. After 6 months with United Press in New York City, joined the Department Of State and was assigned to Paris, France for 4 years. He was Diplomatic Courier carrying top secret pouches to Embassies & Consulates around the world. Visited countries in Central and So. America, Europe, the Middle East and several nations in the Far East.

His career continued: 4 years as a Systems Analyst for the State Dept. Joined a documentary film company traveling to Rome, Beirut, Karachi, Kabul, Peshawar, Bangkok, finally settling in Manila for 9 months. Clients included the U.N., Philippine Government, Millers Federation, the Soybean Council and Catawba Corporation.

In 1959 he joined the American Petroleum Institute in New York City as manager of films, radio and television. In 1965 he decided to become a Free Lance film and print writer in NYC. His clients included IBM, Kodak, Carrier Air Conditioning, Western Electric, Multiple Sclerosis Foundation, Long Island Lighting and several other companies and trade associations. He has also written several articles for the Worcester Telegram, New York Times, Asbury Park Press, INC. Magazine and others.
Just before he passed he was working on a book about Vietnam’s Agent Orange.

Never married, he is survived by his cousin Marjorie Olson Barstow (daughter of Richard U. and Rose Askling Olson of Worcester), her 3 children and 4 grand children, cousin Barbara Stephenson of Harrisburg and her family, plus friends in Worcester, Boston, New York City, Washington, DC, Florida and California.

He was a member of American Legion Post #1 in Paris, VFW Post 2179 in Port Monmouth, N.J., the Fifth Air Force Association - 49th Group...and others.
He will be interred at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery outside Washington DC along with his brother Paul H. Askling, already deceased. Funeral arrangements are handled by the Nordgren Funeral Home 300 Lincoln St., Worcester. There will be no memorial service.
