Helen Harney, 78, of Derry, NH died Wednesday June 17, 2015 in the Pleasant Valley Nursing Home, Derry. Mrs. Harney was born in Boston, MA on May 18, 1937, a daughter of the late John and Mary (Karwowska) Wishnivski. She had resided in Derry since 1976, formerly living in S. Weymouth and Boston, MA. After the U.S. Navy, she assumed a career as a mortgage credit specialist with the US Dept. of Housing and Urban Development. She was a communicant of Holy Cross Parish and St. Thomas Aquinas Church, both of Derry. She delighted in both singing and listening to classical and opera music. She enjoyed her time in retirement, and loved cooking and eating traditional Polish foods.
She is survived by her son, Walter J. Harney, Jr. of Derry and two nephews, John and Gregory Pennington, both of Lowell, MA. Helen was predeceased by her beloved husband, Walter J. Harney, Sr. in 1990 and by her sister, Jane Pennington.
Calling hours were Sunday, June 21, 2015 from 3 to 5 pm at the Peabody Funeral Homes and Crematorium, 15 Birch St., Derry. A Liturgy of Christian Burial was celebrated Monday at 10:00 am at Holy Cross Parish, 187 Hampstead Rd., Derry. Burial was in New Calvary Cemetery, Mattapan, MA.
