Obituary

Rockland – Robert D. Abel, (Bob) 84, a longtime resident of Rockland, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, June 7th, surrounded by his family, after a short period of failing health. He was the beloved husband of Doris (Wentworth) Abel for 60 years.

Born in Brockton, and raised in Whitman, he was the son of the late David C. and Alta M. (Foubister) Abel, and was a graduate of Whitman High School.

Bob was a proud Korean War Veteran having served in the US Navy from 1948-1952, and a member of the Abington American Legion Post 112 for 28 years.

He had been a resident of Rockland for over 50 years, where he and his wife Doris raised their three children. Prior to his retirement, he had been employed by the New England Telephone Company for over 38 years.

His favorite hobby was bowling. He was an avid and talented bowler and has been a member of both the Wednesday and Friday night mixed bowling leagues in Holbrook for many years. On a special note, a few weeks ago, Bob and his teammates finished in first place for the year.

Bob was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, and his greatest joy was the time he spent with his family. He will be remembered as a loving, sweet, kind hearted soul, who got along with everybody, and will be sadly missed by all.

In addition to his wife, Doris, he is survived by his loving children, David Abel and his wife, Joan, of Plymouth; Kevin Abel of Taunton, and Lori Abel of Whitman. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Kathleen Carnali and her husband, Brett, of Florida; Christanie Abel and her fiancé, Matthew Channell, of Hanson; Brandon and Brianna Abel of Plymouth; and his great grandchildren Cheth and Zayin Carnali; and many other loving relatives and friends.

A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, June 16, (which would have been his 85th birthday) at 6:00 PM in the Blanchard Funeral Chapel, Plymouth Street (Rte. 58 @ the rotary) Whitman. Visiting hours will be held prior to the service from 4:00-6:00 PM. A procession will be gathering at 11:45 AM on Wednesday June 17 at the Chapel, followed by a military graveside service in the Colebrook Cemetery, Whitman at 12:00 PM.
