Obituary

CHICOPEE – Frederick S. “Fred” LaVigne, Sr., 95, of the Fairview section of Chicopee, was Called Safely Home on Wednesday, May 27, 2015. He passed into Eternal Life at his home surrounded by the care and comfort of his loving family. He was born in Toledo, Ohio on November 30, 1919, a beloved son of the late Frederick H. and Lillian E. (Shaffer) Holben and was raised and schooled in Toledo. He enlisted in the United States Army and served his country during World War II with the 233rd Army Air Forces Base Unit, attaining the rank of Sergeant. He received the American Theatre Ribbon and the World War II Victory Medal. Following World War II, he decided to re-enlist and served his country during the Korean War, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant and received the National Defense Service Medal. He came to Westover Air Force Base in Chicopee in 1957 and retired on September 1, 1963 with over 20 years of service, attaining the rank of Master Sergeant. Following his military career, Fred was employed for 16 years at the former A. G. Spalding Company in Willimansett where he retired as Supervisor of the Rubber Department. Fred was a longtime communicant of Saint Anne Church where he served his parish for many years as a weekly usher. He was a member of the Fairview Council 4044 Knights of Columbus and a member of the Bishop Joseph Maguire Assembly 2670 Fourth Degree of the Knights of Columbus, both in Chicopee. During his leisure time, Fred enjoyed playing golf with many of his friends. He was predeceased by his beloved wife and best friend, Theresa H. (Condon) LaVigne who was Called Home on June 1, 2008. They were married on January 22, 1952 in the Chapel at Maxwell Air Force Base in Alabama and were blessed with over 56 years of happiness together. He leaves his three devoted children, Frederick S. LaVigne, Jr., Eleanor F. Dugger and her partner, Ken Houle and Elizabeth A. DeMino and her husband, John, all of Chicopee; his three cherished grandchildren, Aimee Trombetto, Brian LaVigne, and Martha Werner and her husband, Ted; his cherished great-grandchildren; his dear sister, Doris Heller of Florida; and his many dear nephews, nieces, cousins and extended members of the LaVigne and Condon families. His funeral will be held on Wednesday morning, June 3, 2015 beginning at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Fairview Chapels, (413-533-3307), 506 Britton Street, Chicopee, MA 01020, (funeral home will open at 8:30 a.m.), followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Saint Anne Church, 30 College Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. His Committal Service with US Air Force Military Honors will be held on Friday, June 5, 2015 at 1 p.m. in the Chapel at the Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, 1390 Main Street, Agawam, MA 01001. His family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday, June 2, 2015 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. The parking lot is located in the rear of the funeral home.
