Obituary

Of Medford passed away peacefully at home with his family on May 26 at age 84. Korean and Vietnam War Navy Veteran. Son of the late John J. and Margaret (Tosejinao) Long. Loving father of MaryAnne Mangone and her husband William of Cambridge, Margaret Calce and her husband Mark of Bristol, RI, Kathleen Long of Somerville, and James Thoele and his wife Tina of Windham, NH. Devoted grandfather of Joseph, Andrea, and Audrey Mangone and Taylor and John Calce. Great grandfather of Joseph, Jack, and Ella Mangone and Isadora Craveiro. Beloved brother of Catherine Potterton of Nashua, NH and Joe Long of Burlington. He was predeceased by his wives Louise and Lorraine and three sisters Eleanor, Margaret, and Dorothy. He is survived by many nieces and nephews. William, known as “Billy”, was the recipient of numerous medals during his twenty years of service in the U.S. Navy. Upon discharge, he held positions in several veterans’ organizations, including serving as Commander of the American Legion Post 45 of Medford. He was recently elected to serve on the Government Council at the VFW Post 1012 of Medford. In addition to his love of family and country, he was an avid Bruins, Red Sox, and Patriots fan. He was happiest at family gatherings and playing cards with friends. He will be sadly missed. A Memorial Service in his honor will be held Saturday, May 30 at 11:00 AM at the VFW located at 114 Mystic Ave, Medford, MA. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the New England Center for Homeless Veterans, located at 17 Court St. Boston, MA 02108.
