Shirley J. Leland, 78, of Hudson, MA, died on May 22, 2015 surrounded by her loving family. She recently celebrated 59 years of marriage to George E. Leland, Jr.
Shirley was born in Penzance, Cornwall, England to John and Eva (Abrahamson) Harrower. Shirley grew up in Penzance, attending St. Gertrude’s Convent School.
She trained as a hair stylist in Penzance. Shirley came to the United States in 1956 to marry George and worked at JFK Middle School as cafeteria manager for more than 16 years.
She attended St. Joseph The Good Provider Church in Berlin, MA, and was a member of the Transatlantic Brides and Parents Association and the Hudson Senior Center. She was an avid bingo player and thoroughly enjoyed knitting, crocheting and cooking.
Shirley is survived by her husband, George E. Leland, Jr., two daughters: Theresa Nogler of Hudson and her husband, George; Donna McGinnis of Half Moon Bay, CA and her husband, Brian; five granddaughters: Jennifer Follett of Marietta, Georgia and her husband, Alex; Stephanie Nogler of Hudson and her companion Christopher Young; Brittany McGinnis of Ponte Vedra, FL; Deidre McGinnis of Richmond, CA; and Kelly McGinnis of Half Moon Bay, CA. She also leaves two great-grandchildren, Julian and Lennox Follett, and beloved dog, Bonnie.
She is also survived by her brother John Collins and sister Wendy Maslen, along with many nieces and nephews in England and Ireland. She was predeceased by two sisters Betty Hawkins and Gloria Rowe.
A funeral mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, May 27th at 11:00 a.m. in Saint Joseph’s the Good Provider Church, 52 West Street, Rt. 62, Berlin. Burial will follow in Forestvale Cemetery, Hudson. Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, May 26th from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Tighe-¬Hamilton Funeral Home, Inc. 50 Central Street, Hudson, MA 01749.
