Miriam A. (Kelly) McCourt, 89, of 18 Crown Street, died Tuesday, March 1 in Hermitage Nursing Home after an illness.
Her Husband F. William McCourt died in 1970, she leaves a niece Patricia A. Walsh of Worcester. She is pre-deceased by a sister Rita M. Kelly and a nephew James McCourt.
She was born in Spencer daughter of Michael J. and Agnes G. (Silk) Kelly. She was a school teacher for 40 years in the Spencer- East Brookfield School System and was the principal of the West Main Street School in Spencer before retiring in 1977. She graduated from David Prouty High School in 1932 and Worcester State College in 1936. She was a member of Our Lady of the Rosary Church.
Mrs. McCourt was the first Selectwomen in Spencer, serving from 1973-1976. The Social Hall in the Spencer Town Hall was named for her as a longtime public servant of the Town of Spencer in 2002. She was a Democratic State Committee Woman. She was on the local Growth Policy Committee in Spencer from 1976-1978, the Spencer Historical Commission for 7 years, a Spencer Town Election Officer from 1956-1964, former trustee of the Cushing Hospital for the Elderly in Framingham from 1963-1970 and a charter member of the former Democratic Women on Wheels in Massachusetts.
The funeral will be held Friday, March 4 from the J. HENRI MORIN & SON FUNERAL HOME, 23 Maple Terr., with a Mass at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of the Rosary Church, 7 Church St., Spencer. Burial will be in Mary, Queen of the Rosary Cemetery, Spencer. A calling hour will be from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Friday in the funeral home.
