TEWKSBURY: Dr. Peter J. McNamara, age 85, a longtime Lowell area podiatrist and a resident of Tewksbury for over 30 years, died Wednesday, March 2, 2005 at Saints Memorial Medical Center in Lowell.
He was the husband of Elizabeth P. (Emmons) McNamara with whom he celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary on November 17th.
Born in Lowell on January 19, 1920, he was the son of the late Peter J. and Ann T. (Hogan) McNamara.
Dr. McNamara attended St. Peters School and was graduated from Lowell High School in 1938.
In 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. He served during World War II with the 458th Amphibious Trucking Company.
In 1949, he was graduated from the Beacon Institute of Podiatry in Boston. Dr. McNamara later attended and was graduated from the Massachusetts School of Physiotherapy. In addition, he attended educational seminars at the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine and was certified by the American Board of Podiatric Surgery.
Dr. McNamara practiced podiatric medicine for over 50 years in the Lowell and Amesbury area and was a staff member at Saints Memorial Medical Center in Lowell until his retirement in 2001.
He was a member of the National and Massachusetts Chapter of the American Podiatry Society.
Dr. McNamara was a resident of North Tewksbury since 1972 and a communicant of St. Robert Bellarmine Parish in West Andover.
Dr. McNamara was a member of the Friends of the Poor Clare Nuns.
He enjoyed many activities especially playing tennis, dancing and skiing.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by 1 daughter; Kathleen A. McNamara of Tewksbury; 3 sons; Attorney Peter J. McNamara, Jr. of Pelham, NH, Philip C. McNamara of Tewksbury and Brian J. McNamara of Lowell; 1 granddaughter; Elizabeth E. McNamara of Pelham, NH; 3 nephews; Thomas McNamara, Jr. of Fraser, CO, G. Paul Hopkins of Waltham and John Hopkins of Medford.
Dr. McNamara was the father-in-law of the late Teresa (Mangin) McNamara and brother of the late Ann M. Hopkins, John J. McNamara and Dr. Thomas J. McNamara.
Calling hours Friday, March 4th, from 4-7 p.m. at the FARMER & DEE FUNERAL HOME, 16 LEE ST., TEWKSBURY. His funeral will held Saturday, March 5th, at 9 a.m. from the funeral home, followed by his Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. at St. Robert Bellarmine Church, 198 Haggett’s Pond Rd., West Andover. Interment will be held at a later date at St. Patrick Cemetery, Lowell. At the request of the family kindly OMIT FLOWERS.
