Fred H. Varley, 93, of Chester, NH, died Wednesday, March 2, 2005 in his home. Mr. Varley was born in Salem, MA on September 14, 1911, a son of the late Roland F. and Pauline (Abbott) Varley. He was a resident of Chester and was formerly a longtime resident of Salem, MA. Mr. Varley graduated from Salem High School, Class of 1930 and the Beverly Trade School in 1932. He taught at the Beverly Trade School for two years, then worked at the United Shoe in Beverly until his retirement in 1973. Mr. Varley was a member of Bass River Lodge IOOF and was a 32nd degree Mason in the Starr King Lodge AF & AM in Salem, MA. He belonged to the Aleppo Temple in Wilmington, MA, serving as a Temple Guard for many years. He was a member of the Chester Congregational Church in Chester and was instrumental in forming the Chester Senior Citizens.
He is survived by one daughter, Carole P. Sheehan of Chester, NH, one son, Roland F. Varley of Revere, MA, five grandchildren, Carrie Hadik of Chester, Mark Danskin of Dracut, MA, Lynda Gayle Stanton of Fletcher, OK, Thomas J. Sheehan of Northwood, NH, Cassandra Varley of Peabody, MA, eight great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Thelma W. (Pierce) Varley who died in 1990.
Friends may call on Friday, March 4th from 6 - 8pm at the Peabody Funeral Homes and Crematorium, 15 Birch St., Derry. A memorial service will be held on Saturday at 1:00pm at the Chester Congregational Church, Chester St., Chester. The burial will be in the Great Hill Cemetery in Chester in the spring.
