Obituary

CHICOPEE – Robert J. Rock, 67, of the Fairview section of Chicopee, was Called Safely Home on Tuesday, May 19, 2015. He passed into Eternal Life at his home surrounded by the care and comfort of his loving family. He was born in Springfield on May 27, 1947, a beloved son of the late Ernest G. and Lorraine (Landry) Rock. He was raised on Butler Street in the Chicopee Falls section of Chicopee and graduated from the former Precious Blood High School in Holyoke. He lived in Chicopee his entire life and had been a resident of Fairview since around 1976. Following high school, Bob enlisted in the United States Air Force and began a career that spanned over 38 years. He served his country during Vietnam and attained the rank of Sergeant. He then enlisted in the United States Air Force Reserves at Westover and served in support of Operations Noble Eagle, Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. He worked as an aircraft mechanic on the C-5’s and retired in 2004 with the rank of Senior Master Sergeant. He received many commendations including the Vietnam Service Medal, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, the Air Force Training Ribbon, the Air Force Meritorious Service Medal and the Air Reserve Forces Meritorious Service Medal. During his leisure time, Bob enjoyed puttering around his home working on various projects. He was known as “Mr. Fix It” and could fix or make anything work. An avid railroad buff, he was a member of the Amherst Railway Society and the Train Collectors Association. He was also a member of the Corvette Club of Western Mass and was very proud of his 1994 Vette. During his younger years, he enjoyed fishing and was a member of several area bowling leagues. Most of all, he was a kind and generous man who was a wonderful provider to his family. He leaves his beloved wife and best friend, Nancy L. (Belanger) Rock. They were married on May 20, 1972 at Saint Anne Church in Fiskdale and would have celebrated 43 years of happiness together on May 20, 2015. He also leaves his devoted son and daughter-in-law, Alex J. Rock and his wife, Jessica, of Chicopee; his three dear brothers, Richard Rock and his wife, Denise, and David Rock and his wife, Barbara, all of Springfield and Ken Rock and Debbie of Old Orchard Beach, ME; his two dear sisters-in-law of the Belanger family, Bonnie Kopp and her husband, Doug, of Sturbridge and Carol Belanger of Chicopee; and his many dear nephews, nieces, cousins and extended members of the Rock and Belanger families. Besides his parents, he was also predeceased by his dear sister-in-law of the Belanger family, Sandra Poulin. His funeral will be held on Wednesday morning, May 27, 2015 beginning at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Fairview Chapels, (413-533-3307), 506 Britton Street, Chicopee, MA 01020, (funeral home will open at 8:30 a.m.) followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Saint Anne Church, 30 College Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. His burial with US Air Force Military Honors will follow the Mass at Sainte Rose Cemetery, 49 Olsen Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. His family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday, May 26, 2015 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. The parking lot is located in the rear of the funeral home.
