Obituary

Robert R. Thackeray, 84, of Marion died February 21, 2005 at home after a brief illness.
He was the husband of Janet L. (Miller) Thackeray.
Born and raised in New Bedford, the son of the late Alfred and Elsie M. (Wilson) Thackeray, he had lived in Marion for the last 53 years.
He was an active member for 53 years of the First Congregational Church of Marion. In his youth, he attended the Christian Science Church in New Bedford.
Mr. Thackeray was formerly employed as a sales representative for Acushnet Company for 36 years until his retirement.
He was a member of the Town of Marion Board of Appeals, was on the Board of Directors for Coastline Elderly Services and was named 2004 Man of the Year by the Sippican Historical Society.
During World War II, he served in the 790th Field Artillery Battalion, with the US Army under General Patton. He participated in the campaigns of the Rhineland, Central Europe and the Battle of the Bulge. He was awarded the World War II Victory Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon with two Bronze Stars and the American Service medal.
He enjoyed marching in the Town of Marion's Annual Memorial Day and Independence Day Parades. He was a member of the Pythagorean Lodge A.F. & A.M. in Marion.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Douglas Thackeray of Marion; a daughter, Dale Thackeray of Marion; a sister, Shirley Christophers of Centerville; 4 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews; extended family, Lee Gunschel, Lee Dougall, Polly Church, Tim Church and Mike Maurer, all of Marion and Debby Thackeray of Mattapoisett.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Funeral Service in the First Congregational Church of Marion Saturday, February 26th at 1 PM. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery.
Visiting hours are omitted.
