Obituary

John E. Hopkins, 91, formerly of Spencer, passed away on March 21 at his Keene, NH home after a brief illness. He was married for 65 years to Lucille (Bernard) Hopkins who passed away in 2010.
John was born in Worcester, the son of John E. Hopkins and Serena E. (Wade) Hopkins. He was predeceased by his 8 siblings.
He graduated from Commerce High and Boston University.
John served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was assigned to an assault combat ship. He was presented w/ several commendation ribbons, some w/ combat stars for duty in the European, the Middle East-North Africa, and the Asiatic Pacific theaters of operation.
John was a former member of the Spencer Savings Bank Board of Trustees, a member of the Worcester County Retirement Board, a member of the Town of Spencer Finance Committee serving as chairman for 3 years, and a trustee of the Spencer Rescue Squad.
Most notably, he retired as municipal Treasurer of the Town of Spencer where he served for 20 years, receiving a key to the town in 1999.
Prior to that, he was a Sales Manager for Paquette Stationary Co for 30 years.
John lived his life to the fullest, with an incredible sense of humor. He enjoyed playing golf and following his favorite sports teams. He loved music and enjoyed singing and dancing. He treasured the time he spent w/ his family and friends.
John leaves behind his daughter, Victoria Hopkins Provost of Richmond NH and Harwich MA, his son-in-law, Russell Provost, and his daughter, Gretchen Hopkins of New York City. He leaves behind three grandchildren: John Hopkins Lynch of Harwich MA, Annie Lynch Stevenson of Westhampton MA, and Indiana Hopkins Kolb of New York City. He also leaves behind two great grandchildren: Walker Hopkins Stevenson of Westhampton MA and Aubrey Jane Lynch of Harwich MA.
The family would like to extend their sincere thanks to the dedicated staff at Bentley Commons in Keene NH, the assisted living residence where John lived for the last 3 years. The loving care they provided will never be forgotten.
A celebration of John's life will be held on Friday, May 1 at J. Henri Morin and Son Funeral Home, 23 Maple Terrace, Spencer MA. The family welcomes relatives and friends to visit with them from 10:00 to 11:00. A memorial service will begin at 11:00. A burial w/ military honors at Mary Queen of the Rosary Cemetery will follow the service.
