Obituary

MALCOLM COLBURN "MAC" NEWELL age 82, of Hingham, MA and Wolfeboro, NH, died on Sunday, February 6th, 2005 at home after a valiant struggle with leukemia. He died in the house in which he was born and lived for most of his life.

Mac graduated from Hingham High School in 1940, attended Wilbraham Academy, and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania, Wharton School in 1947. During World War II, he served with the United States Army in the 106th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron in France. Mr. Newell was a POW in Germany and Czechoslovakia from 1944 to 1945.

He was a security analyst with the Old Colony Trust Department of the First National Bank of Boston and a partner in the securities firm H.C. Wainwright & Co. He was past president of the Boston Security Analyst Society, trustee of Morgan Memorial, incorporator and trustee of the Hingham Institution for Savings, and a member of the Policyholders' Protective Board of the Savings Bank Life Insurance Company of Massachusetts. He also was past president of the Hingham Centre Cemetery.

A longtime summer resident of Wolfeboro, NH, Mac spent many happy hours on Lake Winnipesaukee. He was a member of the Antique Boat Association of New Hampshire, and a member of the Kingswood Golf Club.

He leaves his wife Joan (Dorris) Newell, daughter Lucy Hancock and her husband Skip Hancock, and two grandsons, Charlie and Will, all of Hingham.

A Memorial Service will be conducted on Sunday, Feb. 13th at 2 PM at the Church of St. John the Evangelist, 172 Main St., Hingham. The interment is to be private.
