Obituary

SPRINGFIELD – Colleen T. O’Neil Hayward, 59, of the Forest Park section of Springfield, was Called Safely Home on Friday, April 10, 2015. She passed into Eternal Life at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield surrounded by the care and comfort of her loving family. She was born in Springfield on August 22, 1955, a beloved daughter of the late Michael J. O’Neil and Theresa F. “Terry” (Gloster) O’Neil. She was raised in Springfield, graduated from Our Lady of Hope Elementary School and Cathedral High School and was a lifelong resident of the city. She furthered her education and received an Associate’s Degree in Communications from Becker Junior College in Worcester. Colleen was employed in the Advertising Department at the former Springfield Magazine on Maple Street in Springfield. She later was a partner in the Toggery Limited in Downtown Springfield. She also had worked as a Jewelry and Diamond Consultant at the Diamond Gold Connection in West Springfield and, most recently, at Brad Matthews Jewelry in Holyoke. During her younger years, Colleen was a member of the Springfield Irish Colleen Court and was a model at Steiger’s Department Store. Most of all, she was a loving woman who adored her family and showered them with her love and affection which was returned to her a thousand fold. She was a communicant of Holy Name Church in Springfield. She leaves her beloved husband and best friend of over nine years, William J. Hayward; her special aunt and best friend, Elizabeth “Betty” Breen of Holyoke; her seven loving brothers and sisters, Michael J. O’Neil and Sheila O. Berthiaume and her husband, Bruce, all of Springfield, Patrick G. O’Neil and his wife, Gina Malvezzi, of Northampton, and John J. O’Neil, Mary Beth O’Neil, Maggie M. O’Neil and Terence S. O’Neil and his wife, Emily, all of Springfield; her ten cherished nieces and nephews, Eve Theresa O’Neil, Brandon Berthiaume and his wife, Lyndsi, Jonathan Berthiaume and his partner, Michael Fenton, Alexander Berthiaume, Michael George O’Neil, Ian Patrick O’Neil, James LaRoche, Jr., Julia LaRoche, Aidan O’Neil and Hannah O’Neil; her two cherished grandnieces, Ava June and Nora Catherine Berthiaume; her cherished grandnephew, Kellan Michael Berthiaume; her three dear step-children, Courtney Langieri and her husband, Steven, of Longmeadow, Rebecca Hayward of Springfield and Justin Hayward of Longmeadow; her two dear step-grandchildren, Michael and Lea Langieri; her dear brothers-in-law, Ernest Hayward and his wife, Peggy, and Michael Hayward, all of Ludlow; and her dear sister-in-law, Christina Stewart and her husband, Richard, of Agawam. Colleen also leaves her many dear friends and extended members of the Hayward, O’Neil, Gloster and Breen families. Her funeral will be held on Thursday morning, April 16, 2015 beginning at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Springfield Chapels, (413-737-1177), 7 Chapin Terrace, Springfield, MA 01107, (funeral home will open at 10 a.m.), followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 a.m. in Holy Name Church, 323 Dickinson Street, Springfield, MA 01108. Her burial will be private at the convenience of her family. Her family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday, April 15, 2015 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Her family has requested that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in her memory to the Shriners Hospital for Children, (please specify Springfield), 516 Carew Street, Springfield, MA 01104.
