While stationed in Brazil, he worked informally as an army disc jockey, a memory he recalled with great fondness. After the war, he attended and graduated from Boston University. He spent much of his life working in the insurance industry and several years as a commercial fisherman, fishing vessel owner, and marine surveyor.
He was a passionate lover of the sea and ships. When life and work brought him close to these he was happiest. He was a devoted and lifelong aficionado of jazz and classical music and an avid, wide-ranging reader.
