Joao Fernandes, 76, of New Bedford died April 4, 2015 at St. Luke's Hospital after a long illness.
He was the husband of Julia (Vasconcelos-Lopes) Fernandes.
Born and raised in Brava, Cape Verde, the son of the late Eugenio and Margarida (DosReis Gilmete) Fernandes, he lived in Holland and Brockton before retiring to New Bedford in 2003.
Mr. Fernandes was a parishioner of Our Lady of the Assumption Church.
He enjoyed walking, dancing, spending time with family and friends and playing practical jokes.
Survivors include his wife; 3 daughters, Maria DaCruz of New Bedford, Pedrina Sena and her husband Jose of Fairhaven and Ilda Almeida of Taunton; 4 sisters, Ana Andrade of Central Falls, RI, Laura Gomes and Ana Gilbert, both of Brockton and Julia Fernandes of West Bridgewater; 3 grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late Antonio Fernandes, Maria Fernandes DaLomba and Eugenia Fernandes DePina.
His Funeral will be held on Thursday, April 9th at 8 AM from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, followed by his Funeral Mass at Our Lady of the Assumption Church at 9 AM. Burial will be in Rural Cemetery. Visiting hours Wednesday, April 8th from 4-8 PM.
