Obituary

SPRINGFIELD – Charles M. Flynn, 88, a lifelong resident of the Hungry Hill section of Springfield, was Called Safely Home on Good Friday, April 3, 2015. He passed into Eternal Life at Chapin Center in Springfield surrounded by the care and comfort of his loving family and his wonderful caregivers. He was born in Springfield on Independence Day, July 4, 1926, a beloved son of the late Maurice H. and Mary A. (Hanley) Flynn. He was raised in Springfield and attended the former Springfield Trade High School. At the age of 17, he enlisted in the United States Navy and served his country during World War II, attaining the rank of Seaman. He received the American Area Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Theatre Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. In 1950, he re-enlisted in the United States Navy and served his country in the Korean War aboard the USS Siboney, attaining the rank of General Storekeeper Seaman. Following his military service, he returned to Springfield and was employed for many years as a mail handler and carrier for the United States Postal Service at the Tapley Street Bulk Mail Center and the Post Office on Dwight Street. During his leisure time, Charlie collected stamps and coins. He and his family travelled extensively throughout the United States, Ireland and France. Proud of his Irish heritage, he was a member of the John Boyle O’Reilly Club in Springfield. Active in his Catholic faith, he was a longtime communicant of the former Our Lady of Hope Church where he was a member of the Holy Name Society. He was currently a communicant of Sacred Heart Church in Springfield. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his loving sister, Mary M. Flynn who was Called Home on December 7, 2007; his loving son, Michael N. Flynn who was Called Home on January 19, 2012; and his loving son-in-law, Michael F. Linnehan who was Called Home on July 12, 2012. Most of all, he was a wonderful husband and father who adored his family and showered them with his love and affection which was returned to him a thousand fold. He leaves his beloved wife and best friend, Lucille C. (Falardeau) Flynn. They were married on April 21, 1951 at the former Perpetual Help Church in Holyoke and were blessed with nearly 64 years of happiness together. He also leaves his loving children, Robert E. Flynn of Springfield, Joan M. Linnehan and her companion, Jess Bernier, of Southwick, and John C. Flynn of Belchertown and his fiancée, Marcia Dean of Old Lyme, CT; his cherished grandson, Patrick M. Linnehan and his companion, Alyssa Trahan, of Springfield; his dear brothers-in-law and sister-in-law, Reverend Ernest Falardeau of New York City, Adele Roberts of Springfield and Leon Falardeau and his wife, Evelyn, of Trenton, NJ; and his many dear nephews, nieces and extended members of the Falardeau family. His funeral will be held on Wednesday morning, April 8, 2015 beginning at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Springfield Chapels, (413-737-1177), 7 Chapin Terrace, Springfield, MA 01107, (funeral home will open at 8 a.m.), followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in Sacred Heart Church, 395 Chestnut Street, Springfield, MA 01104. His Committal Service with US Navy Military Honors will follow the Mass at 11 a.m. in the Chapel at the Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, 1390 Main Street, Agawam, MA 01001. His family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday, April 7, 2015 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. His family has requested that memorial donations be made in his memory to the Sacred Heart Church Renovation Fund, 395 Chestnut Street, Springfield, MA 01104.
