Obituary

SPRINGFIELD – Robert J. Walsh, 74, a longtime resident of the Glenwood and Hungry Hill sections of Springfield, was Called Safely Home on Saturday, March 28, 2015. He passed into Eternal Life at the Soldiers’ Home in Holyoke surrounded by the care and comfort of his family and his Comrades at Arms. He was born in Springfield on January 5, 1941, a beloved son of the late Everett F. and Marguerite C. (Murphy) Walsh. He was raised in Springfield, graduated from the former Springfield Trade High School where he excelled on their Varsity Hockey Team and was a lifelong resident of Springfield. He served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War and attained the rank of Specialist Fifth Grade. Following his military service, he returned to Springfield and was employed as a welder and worked for a time at the Naval Submarine Base New London in Groton, Connecticut. He later worked at the Hayden Corporation in West Springfield and retired in 2007. Bob was a member of the National Rifle Association and enjoyed hunting with his friends in New Hampshire. He also enjoyed working restoring automobiles with his numerous friends. He was a communicant of the former Our Lady of Hope Church in Springfield. He was predeceased by his wife, Dawn E. (Wiggins) Walsh who was Called Home on January 23, 1994. He leaves his two loving sisters, Mary Sunter of Keene, NH and Ann Drost of Springfield; his loving brother, Everett F. “Wick” Walsh and his wife, Patricia, of South Hadley; and his six cherished nephews and two cherished nieces, Roy Sunter of Fitzwilliam, NH, Karen Mercier of Colebrook, NH, Brian Sunter of Londonderry, NH, James Suse of Brimfield, Daniel Suse of Chapel Hill, NC, John Drost, Jr. of Wilbraham, Sheila Orzechowski of Chicopee and Jeffrey Walsh of Holyoke. His relatives and friends are invited to a Service of Committal with United States Army Military Honors on Friday, April 3, 2015 at 1 p.m. in the Chapel at the Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, 1390 Main Street, Agawam, MA 01001. There are no visiting hours at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Springfield Chapels, (413-737-1177), 7 Chapin Terrace, Springfield, MA 01107. His family has requested that, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made in his memory to the Friends of the Soldiers’ Home, 110 Cherry Street, Holyoke, MA 01040.
