Mary Stelling

Augusta, GA- Mary Katherine Reiser Stelling, 93, died March 24, 2015 in North Augusta, SC. Born June 21, 1921 in Augusta GA, she was the widow of Carl Henry Stelling and the daughter of the late Walter Allen and Cora Shealy Reiser.

Mary Katherine grew up in Augusta where her father organized and became the first pastor of The Lutheran Church of the Resurrection which he served until his death in 1948. She graduated from Tubman High School, Augusta Junior College, and Newberry College, then earned a Masters Degree in Chemistry from Emory University. During WWII she was a chemist at the Atlanta Quartermaster Depot’s food laboratory assuring high quality rations for the troops. During almost 68 years of marriage to Carl, Mary Katherine dedicated her energies to her family, her church, and the communities in which she lived. In later years she worked as Summer Registrar at Lutheridge Camp and Conference Center in the mountains of North Carolina which the couple loved.

In addition to her husband and parents, Mary Katherine was predeceased by brothers Walter, John Shealy, and William. Survivors include daughters Mary Hunter(Jack), Vivienne Stopper, and Ellen Stelling(Greg Ohlsen); granddaughters Amy Hunter, Katherine Sutherland(Jones), and Lucy Ohlsen; and great-granddaughters Sydney and Megan Sutherland.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 on Saturday, April 18 at Lutheran Church of the Resurrection, 825 Greene St., Augusta, GA with visitation in Reiser Hall following the service.
