Obituary

SPRINGFIELD – Thomas D. Garvey, 91, of the Hungry Hill section of Springfield, was Called Safely Home on Saturday, March 21, 2015. He passed into Eternal Life at the Soldier’s Home in Holyoke surrounded by the care and comfort of his loving family and his wonderful caregivers. He was born in Springfield on May 14, 1923, a beloved son of the late Dennis and Helena (Crohan) Garvey. He was raised in Springfield, graduated from Classical High School and was a lifelong resident of Hungry Hill. He served his country in the United States Navy during World War II and attained the rank of Motor Machinist’s Mate Second Class. He received the American Area Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Medal, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon and the World War II Victory Medal. Following his military service, he returned to Springfield and joined the Teamsters Local 404. He was employed as a truck driver for 45 years for the Table Talk Pie Company in Springfield and Windsor, Connecticut. He also worked as a security guard for 20 years at Mercy Medical Center in Springfield and was a clerk for many years at Flanagan’s Package Store in Chicopee. He was a wonderful provider to his family and showered them with his love and affection which was returned to him a thousand fold. He was a communicant of the former Our Lady of Hope Church in Springfield and currently a communicant of Mary, Mother of Hope Church in East Springfield. He was predeceased by his beloved wife and best friend, Christine (Murphy) Garvey who was Called Home on March 2, 1991. He leaves his three loving children, Thomas J. Garvey of Springfield, Kathleen M. Tshonas and her husband, John, of Brewster, and MaryLou Garvey of Springfield; his two cherished grandchildren, Thomas J. Garvey of Springfield and Kathleen Garvey of Chicopee; his dear sister-in-law, Gloria Garvey of Agawam; and his many dear nephews, nieces, cousins and extended members of the Garvey and Murphy families. Besides his parents and his wife, he was also predeceased by his loving son, Kevin Matthew Garvey who was Called Home on January 9, 1951; his three dear brothers, John, William and Edward Garvey; and his two dear sisters, Kathleen Garvey and Mary Murphy. His funeral will be held on Friday morning, March 27, 2015 beginning at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Springfield Chapels, (413-737-1177), 7 Chapin Terrace, Springfield, MA 01107, (funeral home will open at 8:30 a.m.), followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Mary, Mother of Hope Church, 840 Page Boulevard, East Springfield, MA 01104. His Burial with US Navy Military Honors will follow the Mass at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 421 Tinkham Road, Springfield, MA 01129. His family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday, March 26, 2015 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. His family has requested that memorial donations be made in his memory to The Friends of the Holyoke Soldier’s Home, 110 Cherry Street, Holyoke, MA 01040.
