Gilbert Fernandes, 81, of New Bedford died March 13, 2015 at St. Luke's Hospital after a long illness.
He was the husband of the late Salome "Sally" (Nobrega) Fernandes.
Born in Fairhaven, the son of the late Mariano and Julia (Mello) Fernandes, he lived in New Bedford most of his life.
Mr. Fernandes was a communicant of St. Lawrence Church.
He was formerly employed as a mechanic at the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth for many years until his retirement.
Mr. Fernandes enjoyed the company of his wife and family.
He served in the U.S. Army.
Survivors include his granddaughter, Courtney Lee of New Bedford; his great-granddaughter, Bianca; 2 brothers, George Fernandes and Richard "Butch" Fernandes, both of Fairhaven; a sister, Mary Evangelho of Mattapoisett; and several nieces and nephews.
He was the father of the late Cynthia Lee and the brother of the late Edward Fernandes, Lionel Fernandes and Louise "Dolly" Fernandes.
