Obituary

Alexander D. Smith, a longtime resident of Groton and Mystic passed away peacefully on March 17, 2015 at his home in Mystic.

Alex was the second of 3 children, born in Portland Maine to Frank and Edith Smith. He was raised with younger sister Sally and older brother Frank Jr. in Portland. Alex and Frank were avid back country skiers and ferocious ping-pong players while growing up in Maine. The family enjoyed Sebago Lake with wind skating in the winter and spending time at their cottage in the summer.

Alex attended the University of Maine before being called up to serve in the Army during World War II.

He and his family moved to Groton, and he worked as a Planner at paper companies in Montville, New Haven and New Hampshire. He worked and commuted to the New Haven plant for many years with longtime friend, Bill Stefanski. He raised 2 sons, Alex Jr. and Tim. Upon retirement, one of his favorite hobbies was as a member of the "bowling team" at Holiday Bowl. He also enjoyed a round of golf at Shennecossett Golf Course with friends.

He met and was happily married to Sondra Levitt in 1990. They met wonderful neighbors and enjoyed being part of downtown Mystic. They enjoyed gardening, going to musicals at Goodspeed Playhouse and traveling. They could be seen riding around Mystic in their red BMW. Alex frequently enjoyed his favorite New England meal, steamed clams and lobster. He closely followed his beloved Celtics, Patriots, and Red Sox.

Alex is remembered for having a big heart and in his latter years for handing out mounted sea shells, small wooden boats and pencil holders he handcrafted as token s of appreciation.

He is predeceased by his parents and beloved brother Frank, and son Alex Jr. He is survived by his wife Sondra, sister Sally Gray, son Tim and his wife Danielle Smith and grandson David of San Diego.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, May 29, 2015 at 10:00am at St. Patrick Church, 32 East Main Street, Mystic. Burial will follow in Elm Grove Cemetery, Mystic.
