Wilfred H. "Fid" Tremblay of New Bedford died Saturday March 14, 2015 peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of Ann (Aylward) Tremblay; they had been married for 51 years.
Born in Taunton, the son of the late George and Alma (Despres) Tremblay, he lived in New Bedford for most of his life.
Mr. Tremblay was formerly employed as a postal clerk at the Downtown New Bedford Post Office until his retirement. He had previously worked for Ace Cabinet Company. After his retirement he had worked as a funeral assistant at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals and Rock Funeral Home.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps.
He was a graduate of St. Anthony's High School.
Mr. Tremblay was a member of the Acushnet Lions Club, where he published their newsletter for 12 years and was the recipient of the Melvin Jones Award. He was a member of the American-Canadian Association and the Knights of Columbus. He had been a volunteer at LaSallette Shrine and St. Luke's Hospital. In 1958, he received a commendation from the Freedom Foundation for his service as a member of the AMVETS in the "fight apathy" publicity campaign that he was conducting.
He enjoyed playing pool, cribbage, and cards. He loved waterskiing and taught the sport to many people at the family summer cottage. He loved going on vacation and spending time with his family. He was well known for his smile and quick wit.
He is survived by his wife Ann; nine children, James Tremblay and his wife Kristine, Maureen Oliveira and her husband Richard, Kathleen Hartford and her husband Eric, Michael Tremblay, Christine Tremblay, Allan Tremblay, Joseph Tremblay, Luciana Tremblay, and Mary Fe Vieira and her husband Felipe; a sister, Lorraine Desrosiers; twelve grandchildren, Erin, Alison, Sophia, Gabrielle, Matthew, Shannon, Sara, Julia, Kenji, Cameron, Kai, and Jaiden; and several nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late Norman Tremblay.
His Funeral will be held on Thursday at 9 AM from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, followed by his Funeral Mass at St. Julie Billiart Church, Dartmouth at 10 AM.
