WORCESTER-George R. Kalat, 90, of Worcester passed away Wednesday, March 11 in his home. He was predeceased by Joan (Odlin) Kalat and their two daughters, Joann Kalat and Elise Abigail Kalat.
George leaves a daughter, Betsey Harvey and her husband, Ian of Worcester; a granddaughter, Gillian Elise Harvey; and four nieces and nephews, Missy Kalat, Susan Roberts, Norman Kalat and Eduard Hueber. Three siblings, Marie Hueber, Norman Kalat and Paul Kalat predeceased him. He was born in Worcester, son of Godlieb W. and Alma H. (Nielson) Kalat and graduated from, Worcester Academy, Worcester Junior College and the Massachusetts Maritime Academy. George served proudly in the Navy during WWII, seeing action in the Pacific Theatre and later retiring from the Massachusetts Naval Reserves.
George began his career in the family grocery business, Kennedy Butter and Eggs, eventually running several locations in the Worcester area. He later moved to Pennsylvania to continue his career at Weiss Supermarkets. He returned to Massachusetts in his retirement living first in New London, NH, before coming back to Worcester. He was a longtime member of All Saints Church, the Greendale Retired Men’s Club, the Holden Senior Center and active at the J.C.C. where he enjoyed participating in water aerobics. George was an avid walker and could be seen all over Tatnuck. He enjoyed traveling extensively to Europe, especially Vienna to visit family.
A Memorial Service will be held Monday, April 6 at 10:00am in the chapel of All Saints Church, 10 Irving Street. The family will be greeting people from 9:30 to 10:00am in the chapel. A private burial will be held at the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the Massachusetts Maritime Academy ~ 101 Academy Drive, Buzzards Bay, MA 02532.
