Olive Walker, a resident of the St. Francis Nursing Center, Worcester died Tuesday, March 3rd three months shy of the 97th birthday.
Olive was born June 7, 1918 in Hopewell, Jamaica. Her parents were James and Lucretia Walker. She grew up in Hopewell, a small village just to the south of Montego Bay, as one of nine siblings. Olive graduated high school and then attended Kingston Commercial Institute training to be a secretary. She worked as a secretary during her youth in Jamaica, emigrating to Cuba in 1944.
She worked as a secretary for the U. S. Guantanamo naval base in Cuba for 22 years, becoming fully fluent in Spanish. She emigrated to the United States in 1984, sponsored for citizenship by her brother, Bertram, with whom she made her home. She was a secretary for Liberty Mutual Insurance until retiring in 1992.
Olive was predeceased by her eight sisters and brothers; Ruth, Ambrosia, Caswall, Howard, Wilbert, Christopher, Eugene and Bertram. She is survived by her nieces, Poletia Smith and Eleanor Spence of Toronto, Canada and Ann Bennett of Jamaica; her nephews, Ashley Bennett of Toronto, Braithe Walker of Worcester, and Lloyd Walker of Florida.
There will be no calling hours. Following cremation her urn will be interred with her brother, Bertram at Rural Cemetery, Worcester. O’CONNOR BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 592 Park Avenue is directing arrangements.
