Obituary

TEWKSBURY/LEICESTER: Gary Gurney, East Street, age 54, passed away Monday evening, March 2, 2015, after a long and challenging illness. Gary is predeceased by his parents, James and Dorothy (Phillips) Gurney and his brother, Bruce. Gary is survived by his brother David, residing in Wittier, California and his sister and brother-in-law Nancy and Peter Moore residing in Holland , Ma. Gary leaves several aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews.

Gary had grown up in Leicester, enjoying Cedar Meadow Lake and the woods as a child. He spent many years at Worcester State Hospital. The staff and peers provided unconditional support through his challenges. His best adult years were spent residing at Hamilton House in Milford, Ma., as a supported housing resident. The dedication and commitment that Gary received is truly amazing.

Gary enjoyed drawing, painting, designing and creating blue prints. He utilized many medians, including water color, acrylics, oils and others. His talent was shared with people that he genuinely cared about.

In his final years, Gary appreciated the care and dedication provided him through Tewksbury State Hospital as his health deteriorated. Gary required mental health supports to maintain his dignity and assist him with the daily challenges his mental and physical health issues presented. The family is forever grateful for the care and compassion that all of the staff throughout the years have provided him.

The family plans a spring burial at Pine Grove cemetery in Leicester, Ma. There are no calling hours. The family requests donations in lieu of flowers be made to Tewksbury State Hospital, psychiatric unit, Tewksbury, Ma. with a request to purchase art materials for the clients served. Funeral arrangements are being provided through Morin Funeral Home, Leicester, Ma.
