NEW BEDFORD -- Helen A. (Knowlton) Pelton, 88, of Mattapoisett and Fairhaven died Monday, Jan. 10, 2005, at St. Luke's Hospital after a period of declining health. She was the widow of William F. Pelton Jr.
Born in Attleboro, daughter of the late Charles Knowlton and Ethel (MacPherson) Knowlton, she was a lifelong area resident.
Mrs. Pelton was a graduate of Fairhaven High School and secretary of her honor society.
She was an active member of the Unitarian/Universalist Society of Fairhaven and a member of the women's alliance of her church. She was known for her volunteer work with the annual church bazaar, digging for clams to make chowder and preparing delicious lobster rolls.
She was an avid tennis player and active with the FISH program in Mattapoisett.
Survivors include a daughter, Susan Appel of Hudson; a son, Peter J. Pelton of Houston, Texas; a sister, Grace Jones of Fairhaven; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was the sister of the late Charles and Elwin Knowlton.
Her memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Wilson Chapel, 479 County St. Her burial will be private.
