Francis X. "Frank" Whalen, a resident of Clearwater, Florida and formerly of Charlestown, entered into eternal life on Saturday, February 28, 2015 at Largo Medical Center in Largo, Florida following an extended illness. He was 87 years old.
Frank was born in Boston on November 30, 1927, a son of the late Francis C. Whalen and Anna J. (O'Connell) Whalen. He grew up in Charlestown where he was educated in the Boston Public School system. Frank enlisted into the United States Navy on January 12, 1945 and served his country with honor and courage during World War II. He was discharged on July 12, 1946 with the rank of Seaman First Class. Frank worked many years in the maintenance department of several local colleges. He was a longtime friend of Bill W.
Frank is the beloved husband of the late Dorothy A. (Garvin) Whalen. He is the devoted father of Joseph Wood and his wife Frances of Mashpee, Dorothy McDonald of Clearwater, Florida, Mary Kyle and her husband Stephen of Derry, New Hampshire and Thomas Whalen and his wife Brenda of Charlestown. He is the loving Papa to Timothy, Kathleen, Timothy, Kimberly, Sean, Michelle, Thomas, Kerryn, Leisa, the late Ryan and Joseph and also his great-grandchildren Jalen, T.J., McKenzie, Kaylee, Corinne, Elsie and the late Brendon. He is the brother of the late Joseph Whalen and Ann Downey. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend Frank's Funeral on Friday, March 6, 2015 at 9 A.M. from The Carr Funeral Home, 220 Bunker Hill St. Charlestown followed by his Funeral Mass in St. Mary's Church, 55 Warren St. Charlestown at 10 A.M. Private burial at the Veterans Administration National Cemetery in Bourne. Visiting hours Thursday, March 5, 2015 from 4 to 8 P.M. in the funeral home.
