Mr. John David Townsend, Sr. a resident of Andover and beloved husband of the late Claire E. (Beaulieau) Townsend, passed away at the Hathorne Hill Genesis Health Care Center in Danvers on Sunday morning, March 1, 2015. He was 91 years old.
Born in Andover, Massachusetts, on January 30, 1924, John was the beloved son of the late Nelson A. and Ada (Cobath) Townsend. Mr. Townsend served in the US Coast Guard, entering the military at Boston on September 28, 1942 and receiving his honorable discharge from Boston on November 13, 1945. While serving in the military, John worked as a Gunner's Mate, Second Class. He had worked as a truck mechanic for many years. In his spare time, John enjoyed riding his Harley Davison on the open road and also enjoyed traveling in his motor home. He loved listening to country music, was an avid dancer and was a “Jack of all Trades”. He could fix anything. John was a very happy-go-lucky person and always had a smile on his face. He will be dearly missed.
He is survived by his loving children; John Jr. “David” and his wife Nancy Townsend of Bridgeton, Maine, Bruce W. and his wife Linda B. Townsend of Vero Beach, Florida and Brenda L. Toczylowski of Ipswich and eight cherished grandchildren; Mark, Charles, Cindy, John, Wendy, Tracey, Rebecca and Patty. He is also survived by nine great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Gardner, Nelson “Earl” and Andrew “Buddy” Townsend and Marion Duncan.
His funeral service will be celebrated in the Burke-Magliozzi Funeral Home, 390 North Main Street, Andover on Saturday, March 7, 2015 at 10:30AM. Relatives and friends are most welcome to attend. Calling hours will be held on Friday from 4 to 8 PM. Interment will be in the Spring Grove Cemetery in Andover.
