E. Gladys Emery, 91, of Derry, NH, passed away Sunday March 1, 2015 in Parkland Medical Center in Derry following a brief illness. She was born in Wakefield, MA on November 24, 1923, a daughter of the late George E. Blair and Marion (Crockford-Watts) Blair. Gladys graduated from Wakefield High School in 1942, attended Malden Business School and after graduation, was employed as a teller at the Boston Five Cent Savings Bank for 10 years. She moved to Derry in 1952 and was an optometric assistant in her husband’s newly established practice. She was a member of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church and was active in the Friendship Circle. Gladys was a past officer at Ransford Chapter #3 Order of Eastern Star. She was a member and past president of the women’s auxiliary of the New England Optometric Association.
She is survived by her husband, Dr. Richard A. Emery of Derry; one son, Dr. Keith A. Emery and his wife Janice of Derry; her grandson, Justin B. Emery of Quincy, MA; as well as several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by three sisters, Elizabeth J. Hennessey of Wakefield, MA, Dorothy R. Sias of Reading, MA, and Florence P. Gould of Wakefield, MA.
For the past three years, Gladys has enjoyed living with her husband Richard at the Birch Heights Independent Living facility.
A calling hour was held on Friday, March 6th from 10 - 11am in the Peabody Funeral Homes and Crematorium, 15 Birch St., Derry. Funeral services followed at 11:00am in the funeral home. Private burial will be at a later date in Forest Hill Cemetery in E. Derry.
