BROOKLINE-Frances Elizabeth (Monahan) McCauley, 79 of 20 Chapel Street, died on Tuesday, January 4th at the Jewish Memorial Hospital in Boston. Her husband of 50 years, John Scott McCauley died Friday, December 31st. She leaves a son, John Scott McCauley, Jr. and a daughter, Ellen Frances McCauley, both of Brookline, a brother, Philip Redmond Monahan of Worcester, a brother-in-law, Edwin John Reavey of Worcester and many nephews and nieces. Four sisters, Helen Mary (Monahan) Reavey, Ruth Frances (Monahan) Blackmer, Grace Elizabeth Monahan, Mary Genevieve Monahan and one brother, George Francis Monahan predeceased her.
She was born in Worcester, Massachusetts the daughter of George Thomas and Helena Agnes (Donovan) Monahan and graduated from South High School in Worcester. She obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree from Regis College in Weston and a Master of Arts degree from Catholic University of America in Washington D.C.
Mrs. McCauley worked as a guidance counselor for the Quincy School of Nurses at Quincy City Hospital in Quincy. Mrs. McCauley then worked for several years at the U.S. Department of the Navy, Bureau of Naval Personnel, under the U.S. Department of Defense. She was an educational specialist with the Information and Education Section Training Division located at the Navy Annex in Arlington, Virginia. She accompanied her husband overseas on assignment for the International Labor Organization (ILO), an agency of the United Nations. She lived first in Tehran, Iran for a year and later in Maseru, Lesotho in Southern Africa for almost two years.
The funeral is Saturday, January 8th from O’CONNOR BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 592 Park Avenue with a Mass at 10:00 in Our Lady of the Angels Church, 1222 Main Street. Burial will be in St. John’s Cemetery. Calling hours are Friday, January 7th from 2:00 until 4:00 PM and 7:00 until 9:00 PM in the funeral home.
