Obituary

CHICOPEE – Gregory W. D’Elia, 59, of South Hadley, was Called Safely Home on Tuesday, February 24, 2015. He passed into Eternal Life at UMASS Medical Center in Worcester surrounded by the care and comfort of his loving family. He was born on Pepperrell Air Force Base in Saint John’s, Newfoundland, Canada on September 1, 1955, a beloved son of the late Rosario H. and Olive M. (O’Brien) D’Elia. His early years were spent in Newfoundland, Canada as his father was a career Air Force veteran. His dad’s last duty assignment was in 1965 when he was stationed at Westover Air Force Base in Chicopee. Greg served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War and attained the rank of Private First Class. He received the National Defense Service Medal. He was last employed at the Bliss Street Parking Garage in Springfield. He was a communicant of Saint Anne Church in Chicopee. He leaves his loving brother, Guy F. D’Elia of Chicopee; his two loving sisters, Michelle M. Dent and Susie M. D’Elia, both of Chicopee; his cherished niece, Angela Guillemette and her husband, Bryan, of Chicopee; his two cherished grandnieces, Chloe and Kaelen Guillemette; and his many dear uncles, aunts, cousins and numerous friends. His funeral will be held on Wednesday morning, March 4, 2015 beginning at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Fairview Chapels, (413-533-3307), 506 Britton Street, Chicopee, MA 01020, (funeral home will open at 8:30 a.m.) followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Saint Anne Church, 30 College Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. His Burial with US Army Military Honors will be private at the convenience of his family at Notre Dame Cemetery, 63 Lyman Street, South Hadley, MA 01075. His family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday, March 3, 2015 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. The parking lot is located in the rear of the funeral home. His family has requested that memorial donations be made in his memory to the UMASS Memorial Foundation Office, Organ Transplant Patient Assistance Fund, 333 South Street, Shrewsbury, MA 01545.
