Obituary

William Mitzel, 74, of Derry, NH died April 2, 2002 in the Parkland Medical Center, Derry following a sudden illness. Mr. Mitzel was born in Hauge, N.D. on March 12, 1928 the son of the late Carl and Barbara (Singer) Mitzel. Mr. Mitzel was a US Army veteran having served during the Korean Conflict. He had resided in Derry for the past 24 years, formerly living in the Boston area and South Dakota. Mr. Mitzel retired after 43 years of railroad service with Amtrak in Boston and Milwaukee Railroad in Aberdeen, SD. He was a 3rd degree member of the Knights of Columbus Bishop Peterson Council #4442 and had also served as a 4th degree Officer in the Bishop Peterson Assembly #0641 both of Salem. In addition, he served as Faithful Navigator for two years. Mr. Mitzel was also an active member of the American Legion Lester Chase Post #9 and the V.F.W. Post 1617 both of Derry. He was a member of St. Peter’s Church, Auburn where was very active.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Regartha (Heinz) Mitzel, Derry, two sons, Richard (wife Ellen) Mitzel, Danvers, Ma, Kenneth Mitzel, Franklin, Ma, two daughters, Deborah Hughes, Canyon Country, Ca, Tamara Janiak, Manchester, NH, two grandchildren, one brother, Carl Mitzel, Richmond, MN, one sister, Joan Loher, San Jose, Ca, also his half brother, Harry Salwei, Mansfield, SD.

Calling hours will be Friday April 5th from 3-5 and 7-9pm in the Peabody Funeral Homes and Crematorium, 15 Birch St., Derry. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Saturday April 6th at 9:30am in St. Peter’s Church, Auburn. Committal services will be held Monday April 8th at 10:00am in the chapel of the NH Veterans Cemetery, Boscawen, NH.
