Obituary

BROOKLINE-John Scott McCauley, 87, of 20 Chapel Street, died Friday, December 31st at Hebrew Rehabilitation Center. He leaves his wife of 50 years, Frances E. (Monahan) McCauley, a son, John Scott McCauley, Jr. and a daughter, Ellen Frances McCauley both of Brookline, many nephews and nieces. 2 sisters, Betty Andrews and Margaret Willard predeceased him.

He was born in La Crosse, Wisconsin the son of Clarence Edwin and Agnes Genevieve (Lynch) McCauley and graduated from Hillsboro High School. He obtained his Bachelor and Master of Arts degrees from the University of Wisconsin and his Doctor of Philosophy from Littauer School of Public Administration, Harvard University. He served in the Army during WWII, first in Miami Beach as an Army Air Corps classifier, then in the North African and European Theater of Operations as an assistant to General Jacob Devers, commander of the 6th Army Group. He attained the rank of warrant officer junior grade. Mr. McCauley worked as an economist for the U.S. Department of Labor for more than thirty years. He worked on the Occupational Outlook Handbook and served as Director of the Office of Manpower Training Operations. He then became a Special Assistant to the Director, Farm, Labor and Rural Manpower Services. After retiring in December, 1974, he worked as an economist for the International Labor Organization (ILO), an agency of the United Nations. He was assigned first to Tehran, Iran for a year and later to Maseru, Lesotho in Southern Africa for almost two years.

The funeral is Saturday, January 8th from O’CONNOR BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 592 Park Avenue with a Mass at 10:00 in Our Lady of the Angels Church, 1222 Main Street. Burial will be in St. John’s Cemetery. Calling hours are Friday, January 7th from 2:00 until 4:00 PM and 7:00 until 9:00 PM in the funeral home.
