Obituary

Laconia – Madeleine A. (Kingsley) VanHagen, 95, formerly of 22 Heritage Terrace, Belmont, passed from this life on Friday, February 13, 2015 at Genesis Laconia Rehabilitation Center after a brief period of failing health.

She was born on April 25, 1919 in Whitehall, NY, the daughter of the late Charles and Alma (Guyotte) Kingsley. She was a 1937 graduate of Whitehall High School and also was a graduate of St. Margaret’s House and Hospital in 1941. Madeleine was married to Charles VanHagen in February of 1944, living in Long Island, NY. They moved to Plymouth in 1958 and were active in the Plymouth Methodist Church as well as local community projects. Madeleine was proud to be part of the creation of the Pemi-Baker Home Health Agency in Plymouth and it’s first Chairman of the Board. Her true joy came from spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She loved any excuse for a family gathering. She retired to Belmont in 2006 where she was a member of the First Baptist Church.

She is survived by her husband of 70 years, Charles S. VanHagen of Laconia, one son, Philip K. VanHagen and his wife Jeannette of Belmont, two daughters; Sandra VanHagen of Belmont and Karen White and her husband David of Belmont, three grandchildren; Timothy VanHagen of Dallas, Georgia, Jennifer Green of Moravia, NY and Christopher White of Pembroke, three great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her two sisters; Leona Marianiello and Mildred Kingsley and one brother, Charles L. Kingsley.

Madeleine’s family wants to extend a heartfelt thank you to the nurses and staff of Genesis Laconia Rehabilitation Center for the wonderful care they gave her during her stay there.

There will be no calling hours.

A memorial service will be held at 11AM on Saturday, May 9, 2015 at the First Baptist Church of Belmont, 49 Church Street, Belmont. Burial will be privately held in Greenmount Cemetery in Whitehall, NY.

Contributions in her memory may be made to Pemi-Baker Community Health and Hospice, 101 Boulder Point Drive, Plymouth, NH 03264, an organization that meant a lot to Madeleine.
