SPRINGFIELD – Harry P. Kraverotis, 92, a longtime resident of Springfield, was Called Safely Home on Thursday, February 12, 2015. He passed into Eternal Life from Baystate Medical Center in Springfield surrounded by the care and comfort of his loving family. He was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut on July 18, 1922, a beloved son of the late Peter and Helen (Panagiopoulos) Kraverotis. He came to Springfield with his family as a young child and lived on Bond Street in the North End section of Springfield. He graduated from the former Technical High School in Springfield and lived for most of his life in Springfield. He served his country in the United States Army during World War II and attained the rank of Private First Class. He served with the 304th Infantry Division, Special Ops and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He received the European African Middle Eastern Theatre Campaign Ribbon, the American Theatre Camp Ribbon, the Bronze Star for acts of heroism, the World War II Victory Medal and the Meritorious Achievement Award for service in a combat zone. Following his military service, he returned to Springfield and joined the Springfield Fire Department. He served at several of the area fire stations and retired after 25 years at the Oakland Street Fire Station. Harry was very proud of his military service and volunteered by placing flags until the age of 86 at the Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery in Agawam. He loved his church, his Greek heritage and was communicant of Saint George Greek Orthodox Cathedral. He was a family man who had an immeasurable love for his family and his many friends. He was predeceased by his beloved wife and best friend, Angelina (Cokkinias) Kraverotis who was Called Home on January 21, 1988. They were married on April 28, 1946 at Saint George Greek Orthodox Church in Springfield and were blessed with over 41 years of happiness together. He also leaves his two devoted daughters, Elayne Gumlaw and her husband, Roger, of Agawam, and Antigone Fiske and her husband, Richard, of Ludlow; his four cherished grandchildren whom he adored, Stephanie and Nicholas Gumlaw, and Desiree and Angelique Fiske; and his many dear nephews, nieces, cousins, friends and extended members of the Kraverotis and Cokkinias families. Besides his parents and his wife, he was also predeceased by his loving brothers, Christos Kraverotis, Angelo Kraver, and Nicholas Kraverotis. He will be sadly missed by his faithful canine companions, his Labrador grand-dogs Kemba and Charley. His relatives and friends are invited to attend visiting hours on Thursday, February 19, 2015 from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. followed by a Funeral Service at 11 a.m. at Saint George Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 2320 Main Street, Springfield, MA 01107. His burial with US Army Military Honors will follow the service at Oak Grove Cemetery, 426 Bay Street, Springfield, MA 01109.
