Evans, GA - Irene Maria Walters, 86, of Augusta, ascended to her home in Heaven on the evening of February 11th, 2015, with her family at her side.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM on Saturday, February 14th, 2015, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church with Rev. Roger Schwartz officiating. Interment to follow in Hillcrest Memorial Park.
Irene was born in Cologne, Germany on February 27th, 1928. She is the daughter of Bernard Winkel and Carola and Albert Glindemann. After working 30 years as a switchboard operator and a sales associate at Sears, Roebuck & Co., she spent a great deal of her time camping in the North Georgia mountains with her husband of over 60 years and her Dachshunds, Mitzie and Sassy. Known affectionately by many as “Nana”, she loved cooking and playing cards, but it was her friends and extended family whom she loved more than anything in the world, and to whom she would often say: “I love you with all of my heart.”
Irene is survived by her daughter Linda Lack, her son Vernon D. Walters, Jr., and her son-in-law Bobby Lack—whom she loved like a son—all of Augusta. She also leaves behind four grandsons, Danny Lack, Kevin Lack, Michael Lack, and Brian Lack; two granddaughters, Natalie Walters and Valerie Walters, and many great-grandchildren; as well as brothers-in-law, Paul Walters and Ben Walters, and sisters-in-law, Janice Locklear and Mary Rudowski.
Her family is grateful to Dr. Paul Cundey III, Dr. Stephen Shlaer, and the staff at University Hospital and Gentiva Hospice, as well as the loving people of Washington Commons, for the comfort, care, and friendship they provided during her final months.
Contributions may be made in her honor to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday evening, February 13th, 2015, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.
