Bernardino R. Joia, 84, of New Bedford died Thursday February 5, 2015 at St. Luke's Hospital after a brief illness.
Born in Brava, Cape Verde, the son of the late Francisco "Supai" Joia and Maria (Rene) Joia, he lived in Brockton before moving to New Bedford.
Mr. Joia was formerly employed by the Washburn Candy Corporation in Brockton.
Survivors include a son, James Joseph Joia of Brockton; a daughter, Maria A. Duclos and her husband Paul of East Providence, R.I.; two brothers, Sebastian Joia of Brockton and Manuel Joia of New Bedford; five sisters, Julia R. Thornton of New Bedford, Ezaura R. Andrade of Peabody, Candida R. Howcroft of Acushnet, Anna R. Barros of New Bedford and Arminda R. Koroski of New Bedford; two grandchildren, Lori Medeiros and Paul Duclos; and many nieces and nephews.
Private arrangements are by the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford. Private burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery.
