June Louise (Franks) Aakjar passed away on February 5, 2015 at the age of 85 surrounded by her loving family. She was born on June 6, 1929, in Sharon, CT and grew up in Dover Plains, NY. She was the daughter of the late Gertrude (Webster) and Charles Henry Franks. June was predeceased by two brothers Russell and Frederick Franks. She married the late Elmer Aakjar, Sr. on April 18, 1954. They were married for 52 years before Elmer passed away in 2007.
After June and Elmer were married, they lived in Dover Plains and Sharon until they moved to Ossining, NY in 1961 with their 5 children. Here their family of five grew to eight; alternating girl and boy down the line. This was an accomplishment she was always very proud of. June was a loving and devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, and friend.
She is survived by her eight children and their families; Adella and Bill Haggerty, Frederick and Sabine Aakjar, Karen and Don Edge, Kelvin Aakjar, Linda and Peter Blasini, Mark Aakjar, Sharon Aakjar, and Elmer, Jr. and Mariann Aakjar. June is also survived by 12 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren, with another one soon to be on its way, who lovingly call her GG. She has a large extended family that includes nieces, nephews, and cousins. Her family brought her much happiness, pride, and joy.
In 2003 June and Elmer moved from Verbank, NY to Arlington Acres in Stonington, CT to be near her daughter Adella and her family. Since August of 2011 she has lived at the Groton Regency Retirement Center. June was loved by the staff and her friends at the Groton Regency for her smile and gentle caring way. Our family is grateful that she spent the end of her life in such a caring and loving place.
June was known for her sweet disposition, gentle spirit, optimism, gratefulness, and kindness by all that knew her. She overcame many obstacles and challenges in her life with dignity, grace, and perseverance. She was quietly strong with a twinkle in her eye and a mischievous and fun-loving side that we all loved.
June loved to cook for her family. Her special recipe for sugar cookies will be passed down through the generations and is presently being made and enjoyed by her great grandchildren along with many other family recipes. Over the years June also enjoyed sewing, doing arts & crafts projects, collecting everything pigs, doing puzzles, playing games, flowers, animal, birds, Chinese food, watching golf on TV, sitting at Eastern Point Beach, and most recently checking Facebook to keep up with her busy family.
June will be deeply missed by her family and friends. Her family will have a memorial service when the flowers are blooming and the birds are chirping.
