Obituary

Albert “Nick” Maiocco, of Winchester, proprieter of the former European Restaurant, died Monday at the Winchester Hospital, after a brief illness. He was 83.

Mr. Maiocco was raised in Somerville, the son of the late Joseph and the late Agnes (Dolci) Maiocco. An Army veteran of World War II, Nick was owner of the famed European Restaurant, in Boston’s North End, for 53 years. The renowned eatery which opened its doors in 1917 served meals to Bostonians and visitors from around the world until its closing in 1997.

Nick lived in Winchester for over 45 years, was a life-time member of the Knights of Columbus, Ausonia Council, Boston and the Medford Lodge of Elks. He enjoyed the company of family and friends, was a devout fan of the Red Sox and often took his chances with scratch tickets.

Nick was the beloved husband of his childhood sweetheart Janet (Nigro) with whom he shared 61 years of marriage. He was a devoted father of Barbara Tomasone and her husband Anthony of Winchester, and his best pal Tracey. He was a dear brother of Gilda Pedi and her husband Mario and Carl Maiocco all of Winchester. He was the uncle of Lewis Pedi, Joan Cronin and her husband “Dusty” and great uncle of Christopher and Nicole.

Friends and family may visit Wednesday 7 - 9 and Thursday from 2 - 4 and 7 - 9 at the Dello Russo Funeral Home, 306 Main St., Medford.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered in St. Mary Church, Winchester, Friday at 10 AM. Burial will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery, Medford.
