CHICOPEE – Patricia G. “Pat” (O’Connell) Johnston, 87, of Chicopee, was Called Safely Home on Sunday, February 1, 2015. She passed into Eternal Life from Baystate Medical Center in Springfield surrounded by the care and comfort of her loving family. She was born in Holyoke on May 13, 1927, a beloved daughter of the late Carl F. and Mary Catherine (Madden) O’Connell. She was raised in Holyoke, graduated from Holyoke High School and lived in Holyoke for many years before moving to Chicopee in the 1960’s. Pat furthered her education and graduated from the Holyoke Hospital School of Nursing where she received her Degree in Nursing. She became a Registered Nurse and during World War II was a Cadet Nurse. She worked for many years as a Public Health Nurse for the Holyoke Visiting Nurse Association and had last worked for 25 years as a Pediatric Nurse at Holyoke Hospital. Most of all, she was a wonderful wife, mother and homemaker to her family and showered them with her love and affection which was returned to her a thousand fold. Active in her Catholic faith, she was a communicant of the former Saint Mary of the Assumption Church in Chicopee and currently a communicant of the Basilica of Saint Stanislaus Bishop and Martyr in Chicopee. She leaves her beloved husband and best friend, John G. “Jack” Johnston. They were married on July 30, 1949 at Blessed Sacrament Church in Holyoke and were blessed with over 65 years of happiness together. She also leaves her two devoted children, Carolyn M. Johnston of Saunderstown, RI and Mark W. Johnston of Russell, MA; her two loving brothers, George F. O’Connell of Westfield and James O’Connell and his wife, Margie, of Longmeadow; her loving sister-in-law of the Johnston family, Charlotte Strong of Holyoke; and her many cherished nephews, nieces, cousins, friends and extended members of the Johnston and O’Connell families. Beside her parents, she was also predeceased by her loving sister, Mary Agatha Carey and her husband, James. Her funeral will be held on Monday morning, February 9, 2015 beginning at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Fairview Chapels, (413-533-3307), 506 Britton Street, Chicopee, MA 01020, (funeral home will open at 8:30 a.m.), followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Saint Anne Church, 30 College Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. Her burial will follow the Mass at Saint Jerome Cemetery, 1674 Northampton Street, Holyoke, MA 01040. Her family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday, February 8, 2015 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. The parking lot is located in the rear of the funeral home.
