Wayne L.Vickers, 72, of Wray, Georgia, died Monday, February 2, 2015, at Rehabilitation Center of South Georgia, in Tifton.
Funeral services will be held 2 PM, Wednesday, February 4, 2015, at Satilla Baptist Church in Irwin County, with the Rev. William Pope, the Rev. Dan Johnson and the Rev. Joe Vaughn officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8,Tuesday evening, at the funeral home in Ocilla.
Mr. Vickers was born August 31, 1942 in Irwin County Georgia, to Wawena Harper Vickers of Wray and the late Lloyd Austin Vickers. He lived in the community all of his life and was a 1960 graduate of Irwin County High School and later attended the University of Georgia. Mr. Vickers retired with 41 years of service with the United States Postal Service, serving in Atlanta, Fitzgerald and Osierfield. He was also owner and operator of V & S Cleaning Service. Mr. Vickers was an avid outdoorsman, who enjoyed hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed cooking and telling stories. He was a member of Satilla Baptist Church where he taught RAs and Sunday school.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his children: Tracy & Jeffery Smith of Ocilla and Tony & Karen Vickers of Leesburg; grandchildren: Dion & Regan Smith of Wray, Anthony & Ashanti Vickers of Ocilla, Dusty & Victoria Smith of Wray and Andrew & Shannon Vickers of Byron; great-grandchildren: Emilee Smith & Cailee Smith; a sister: Marilyn & George Cook of Irwin County and a brother-in-law: W. A. Carver of Wray. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years: Sandra Fields Vickers and his sister: Amelia Carver.
