Obituary

SPRINGFIELD – Marilyn J. (Silva) Berzenski Rose Dowd, 86, of the East Springfield section of Springfield, was Called Safely Home on Sunday, February 1, 2015. She passed into Eternal Life from her home surrounded by the care and comfort of her loving family. She was born in New Bedford, Massachusetts on July 24, 1928, a daughter of the late Antonio J. Silva, Jr. and Agnes M. (Tremblay) Silva. In 1932 at the age of four, she came to Springfield and was raised by her late loving uncle and aunt, Adelard and Marion Remy. She was raised in the Hungry Hill section of Springfield and graduated in 1945 from Cathedral High School. Around 1960, she moved with her family to the East Springfield section of Springfield. She was a former telephone operator at the Westvaco Company in Springfield and had last worked as a sales representative in the Advertising Department of the Chicopee Herald and the Westover Flyer Newspapers. She also worked for many years at the polls in Springfield at the Liberty and the Samuel Bowles Schools. She was a member of the Catholic Women’s Club, the Sacred Heart Over 60 Club, the Mother of Twins Club, and the Hungry Hill Line Dancers. Most of all, she was a wonderful homemaker to her family and showered them with her love and affection which was returned to her a thousand fold. Besides her parents and her uncle and aunt, she was predeceased by her former husband, Edward P. Berzenski, Sr; her second husband, Smith R. Rose who was Called Home on June 30, 1995; her cherished granddaughter, Tara Croteau; and her four dear sisters, Blanche, Dorothy, Margie, and Vivian. She leaves her beloved husband of nine years, Lawrence J. Dowd; her five loving children, Edward P. Berzenski, Jr. and his wife, Charlene, of Port St. Lucie, FL, Paul J. Berzenski and his wife, Joyce, of West Palm Beach, FL, David R. Rose and his wife, Teresa, of Monson, Michael J. Rose and his wife, Beverly, of Springfield, and Mary A. Ludwin and her husband, Bob, of Easthampton; her six cherished grandchildren; her cherished great-granddaughter; her cherished great-great grandson; and her many dear nephews, nieces, cousins, friends and extended members of the Dowd, Silva, Berzenski and Rose families. Her funeral will be held on Thursday morning, February 5, 2015 beginning at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Springfield Chapels, (413-737-1177), 7 Chapin Terrace, Springfield, MA 01107, (funeral home will open at 8:30 a.m.), followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Mary, Mother of Hope Church, 840 Page Boulevard, East Springfield, MA 01104. Her burial will follow the Mass at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 421 Tinkham Road, Springfield, MA 01129.
