Obituary

SPRINGFIELD – Helen T. (Sheehan) Nolan, 97, a longtime resident of the East Springfield section of Springfield, was Called Safely Home on Sunday, January 25, 2015. She passed into Eternal Life from the Atrium at Cardinal Drive in Agawam surrounded by the care and comfort of her loving family. She was born in Springfield on March 10, 1917, a beloved daughter of the late Patrick J. and Carolyn E. (Alderman) Sheehan. She was raised in Springfield, attended the High School of Commerce and lived in East Springfield for many years. She later moved to the American Inn in Southwick and lived there for 12 years before relocating to the Atrium at Cardinal Drive in Agawam. She was last employed as a Postal Clerk for the US Postal Service on Main Street in Springfield and retired in 1977. During World War II, Helen was an inspector at the Westinghouse Corporation in Baltimore, MD. In the 1950’s, she worked as an egg candler at the former Agway in Springfield. She was a member of the John Boyle O’Reilly Women’s Auxiliary and a longtime volunteer at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield. Most of all, she was a wonderful homemaker to her family and showered them with her love and affection which was returned to her a thousand fold. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her beloved husband and best friend, Denis B. Nolan who was Called Home on December 26, 1981; her dear brothers, John Sheehan and Edward Sheehan; and her dear sister, Mary Lombardi. She leaves her two devoted children, Richard B. Nolan of Agawam and Elaine N. Edstrom and her husband, Mark, of Westfield; her cherished granddaughter, Kelly R. Edstrom and her partner, John Farrell, of South Easton; her dear sister, Carol Van Atta and her husband, Gerald, of Springfield; and several dear nephews, nieces, cousins and extended members of the Sheehan family. Due to the snowstorm on Monday, February 2, 2015, her relatives and friends are invited to attend visiting hours on Wednesday morning, February 4, 2015 from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. followed by a Prayer Service at 10 a.m. at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Springfield Chapels, (413-737-1177), 7 Chapin Terrace, Springfield, MA 01107. Her burial will follow the service at Saint Michael Cemetery, 1601 State Street, Springfield, MA 01109. Memorial donations may be made in her memory to a charity of the donor’s choice.
