NORTH DIGHTON – Joseph Travers, husband of the late Hilda C. (Pacheco) Travers, died at his North Dighton home on Jan. 19, 2015.
He was 89.
Born in Fall River, he was the son of the late Augustine and Madeline (Compos) Travers.
Educated in Somerset schools, Joe served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the WWII.
He served with the 3rd Marine Air Wing in the South Pacific, in several operations, including those in Samar, the Philippines and Okinawa.
He later attended New England Technical Institute where he received an associate’s degree in mechanical engineering.
A retired toolmaker, Joe worked for the former Coppercraft Guild and was later employed by the former Sweet Manufacturing Co. of Mansfield.
A licensed commercial pilot, he flew with Mass. Airlines out of New Bedford, and was a flight instructor with King’s Aviation.
Joe was a communicant of St. Nicholas of Myra Church.
Survivors include a son, Joseph Travers and his wife Cheryl of Seattle, Washington; two daughters, Paula Irving and her husband James, and Nancy Pinto and her husband Barry, all of Rehoboth; a sister, Mary Barboza of Fredericksburg, VA; eight grandchildren, Theresa, Jaime, Bryan, Justin, Barret, Evan, Jared and Derek; two great grandchildren, Christiano and Lillian; and several nieces and nephews.
He was also brother of the late Arthur Travers.
His funeral will be held from the Silva Funeral Home, 80 Broadway, Taunton on Friday, Jan. 23rd at 9 a.m. followed by a funeral mass at St. Nicholas of Myra Church, North Dighton at 10 a.m.
Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery, Taunton.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend.
Calling Hours will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, Jan. 22nd from 5 to 7 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
