Eric “Ric” Hamel, 63, of Worcester, died unexpectedly at home Tuesday, January 13th He is survived by his beloved wife of 41 years, Susan (Murphy) Hamel and two daughters, Erica Vellone, her husband Daniel and their son Jackson of Grafton and Melissa Hudson, her husband Scott and their daughter Adelaide of Manchester, CT; his sister Jacqueline DeCelle and her husband, William of Leicester. He was also a steadfast supporter, friend, and confidante to his brothers and sisters-in-law and seven nieces and nephews and grandnieces.
He was born in Worcester the son of Philippe J. and Barbara (Parker) Hamel. Although he spent his life rooted in one place, he remained for all of his life an intellectual explorer. Whether he was exploring the early world of computers, other cultures, or religions, Eric changed the lives of those he met, knew, and loved with his open mind and love of new experiences. This love of learning extended to his traveling to new places. In addition to family camping trips, and adventures, Eric traveled with his wife to Alaska and recently to Ireland to celebrate their fortieth wedding anniversary.
At home, Eric’s roots made him the foundation for his family. The beloved Poppy to Jackson and Adelaide, he found endless delight in entertaining them and all his friends and family with a quick joke, mischievous smile, and enormous heart. He made room for all the travelers he met in his life, but kept at its center, the family he made his life around.
His funeral is Saturday, January 17th with a service at 11:00 a.m. in O’CONNOR BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 592 Park Avenue. Burial will take place at a later date. His calling hours are Friday, January 16th from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. in the funeral home.
