Obituary

Laurence F. "Larry" Almeida, 73, of New Bedford died Monday December 20, 2004 unexpectedly at home.

A life-long resident of New Bedford, he was the son of the late Joseph F. Almeida and Lena (Costa) Vieira. He was a graduate of New Bedford High School and Kinyon-Campbell Business School.

Mr. Almeida was formerly employed as an accountant assistant at Alden Corrugated Box Company for many years. He was also a well- known area musician who played the accordion with "The Novas". He also played every Tuesday at Tony Piedade's Barber Shop on Acushnet Avenue with other musicians.

During the Korean War, he served in the U. S. Navy aboard the U.S.S. Hugh Purvis (DD-709). He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a former member of the Loyal Order of the Moose. He was an avid Boston Red Sox fan.

Survivors include three daughters, Karyn Estrella, and her husband Thomas, of New Bedford, Annette Almeida of Fairhaven, and Dianne Sousa, and her husband John, of Acushnet; three sisters, Alice Grossman of New Bedford, Mary F. Lent of Dartmouth and Dolores L. Vieira of Freetown; six grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.



He was the father of the late Laurence D. Almeida and Daniel J. Almeida, brother of the late Ronald J. Almeida and stepfather of the late Michael Gadomski.

Funeral from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford Thursday December 23, 2004 at 8 AM. Funeral Mass at St. Joseph - St. Therese Church at 9 AM. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting hours will be on Wednesday December 22, 2004 from 2-4 and 7-9 PM. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery.
