Obituary

Nikolaos “Nick” Tzoumbas, 92, of Worcester died Thursday, January 1st in Holy Trinity Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. His wife of 40 years, Maria (Kapnias) Tzoumbas died in 1989. He is survived by his son Leonidas “Louie” Tzoumbas and his wife, Paula, his beloved grandson and namesake Niko and his beloved granddaughter Mariah, all of Redwood City, CA.

He was born in Douviani, Greece the son of Leonidas and Efthalia (Kyriakos) Tzoumbas and came to this America in 1962. As a member of St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Cathedral, he selflessly served his community, first as a Greek School teacher, and eventually as principal of the St. Spyridon Afternoon Greek School program. In the midst of World War II at the age of 18 he was captured by the Italian Army, and transferred a year later to the Dachau Internment Camps, where he remained for two years until liberated in 1945. Nick will be remembered as a man of loyalty, perseverance and courage; and to his family as a devoted husband, and loving father and grandfather.

His funeral is Thursday, January 8th From O’CONNOR BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 592 Park Avenue with a service at 10:00 a.m. in St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Cahedral, 102 Russell Street. Burial will follow in Hope Cemetery. Calling hours are Wednesday from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to to Holy Trinity Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, 600 Barber Avenue, Worcester, MA 01606 or St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Cathedral Building Fund, 102 Russell Street, Worcester, MA 01609.
