Obituary

Rev. Archdeacon Elias “Ely” Hamaty, of Hingham, passed away on December 28, 2014 at the age of 80, following a lengthy illness.
Ely was born and raised in Boston's South End. He worked at his parent's restaurant before opening his own, Richard's Coffee Shop, in Boston's Columbia Point. In 1964 he founded ELCO Electronics in Hingham, MA specializing in marine electronics and communication, which is still in operation today.
Ely was ordained a deacon at St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church in 1995, and was elevated to Archdeacon in 2012.
Deacon Ely was the dear and devoted husband of Mildred (Amaru) Hamaty. Beloved father of Richard Hamaty and his wife Rhoda, and Deborah Galambos and her husband Daniel, all of Hingham, and the late David and Stephen Hamaty. Loving grandfather “Papa” of Susan O’Toole, Richard Hamaty, and Adam, David and Stephen Galambos. Great-grandfather of Sofia, Joseph, Sasha and Nadia. Loving brother of the late Helen Zayady, Mary Teebagy, Pauline Hamaty, Ann Nassiff, Katherine “Josie” Naddaff, Samuel Hamaty, Gloria Glynn, and Lila Hamaty. He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
His Grace Bishop John led all of the region's clergy at the Vesperal Divine Liturgy for the Pre-Feast of the Epiphany, followed by Deacon Ely’s Funeral Service at St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church, on January 5, 2015.

Deacon Ely was laid to rest alongside his son and his sisters at St. Paul’s Cemetery in Hingham.
