Blanche M. (Green) Underwood, 92, formerly of Worcester, passed away Sunday, December 28th in Quabbin Valley Health Center, Athol. Her husband, Russell F. Underwood, died in 1990. She leaves two daughters, Linda Bourque and her husband Ronald of Hubbardston and Rita E. Dana and her husband Stephen of Alton, NH; a son, James A. Underwood and his wife Dorothy of Perry, ME; her cousins, Hazel Stanley and Roberta DesRosier; her nieces, Rosalind Carter and Paula McNally; and eight grandchildren.
She was born in Worcester, the daughter of Alfred and Ethel (Thurston) Green and lived there all her life before moving to Hubbardston in 2010. Mrs. Underwood graduated from South High School and Salter Secretarial School. She was an only child, but had a very full life. Her love for her family has always come first. She had many good friends and neighbors. She loved flowers and birds and enjoyed knitting gifts and sending cards for every occasion. At one time, she worked at Heald Machine Company and after raising her family, she worked at Zayre’s for many years.
Blanche was a part of Worcester history; she was one of the models painted by artist Leon Kroll in his famous mural “The Fruits of Peace” in the Worcester Memorial Auditorium, which was painted in 1939.
The funeral is Wednesday, December 31st with a service at 10:30 A.M. in O’CONNOR BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 592 Park Avenue. Burial will be in Walnut Grove Cemetery, North Brookfield. A visiting hour is from 9:30 until 10:30 A.M. Wednesday in the funeral home. Donations in her memory may be made to the Hubbardston Fire Department, 7 Main Street, Hubbardston, MA 01452.
